I’ve been making a lot of felt softies lately and have been waiting for an opportunity to make a softie from the piles of cotton fabrics I have lying all over the house. I didn’t have to wait long. When Amie Plumley<\/a> joined Sew A Softie for the Festive Season<\/a> with her Santa Claus pillow and I came across a postcard softie in an old craft magazine from way back in the seventies about the same time, I thought it would be fun to make a simple envelope softie that could carry a wish list to Santa.<\/p>\n

What you need to make your envelope softie<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Patterned fabric<\/p>\n

White fabric<\/p>\n

Batting (about 1″ thick)<\/p>\n

Velcro dot<\/p>\n

Needle<\/p>\n

Thread<\/p>\n

Pins<\/p>\n

Cardboard (optional)<\/p>\n

What to do<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Download the envelope template<\/a>. Cut out 2 half-envelope shapes and tape together. Use the template to cut out the envelope shape from the white and patterned fabrics as shown above. Then cut out a 10″ x 7″ rectangle from the white and patterned fabrics as above. Finally, cut out two 9″ x 6″ rectangles from the batting.<\/p>\n

Place the two envelope shapes right side together. Pin and sew them together leaving one side open. Do the same for the two 10″ x 7′ rectangles.<\/p>\n

Turn right side out…<\/p>\n

…and iron flat.<\/p>\n

\"envelope<\/p>\n

Turn the edge of the fabric of the open sides in about 1\/4″…<\/p>\n

…and iron the edges flat.<\/p>\n

\"envelope<\/p>\n

Insert a sheet of cardboard into the envelope so you can write the address without your marker leaving blotches on the back of your envelope. When you’ve written the address remove the cardboard turn the envelope over and…<\/p>\n

…iron the flap of the envelope down.<\/p>\n

\"envelope<\/p>\n

Lift the flap up and sew along the crease.<\/p>\n

\"envelope<\/p>\n

Insert the batting into the envelope shape. Do the same for the rectangle shape.<\/p>\n

\"envelope<\/p>\n

Pin and sew the envelope together as shown above. Keep your sewing line about 1\/8″ from the edge.<\/p>\n

Glue on the velcro dots to hold the flap closed. Glue on any stickers you wish to add. I’ve made a heart sticker from felt for the back of my envelope…<\/p>\n

…another heart sticker for the front and a stamp by embroidering a flower on a square of sky blue felt.<\/p>\n

Hope Santa likes it…now you just have to write up that wish list.<\/p>\n
